Lord Brodie has been a senator of the College of Justice in Scotland since 2002. He was educated at Dollar Academy, Edinburgh University (LLB Hons) and the University of Virginia (LLM). He was admitted to the Scottish Bar in 1976. He was Standing Junior Counsel to the Ministry of Defence (Procurement) and to the Health and Safety Executive. He was appointed Queens Counsel in 1987. He served as an Advocate Depute between 1997 and 1999. He was called to the English Bar (Lincoln’s Inn) in 1991. He was a part-time Chairman of Industrial Tribunals between 1987 and 1991, a part-time Chairman of Medical Appeal Tribunals between 1991 and 1996 and a part-time Chairman of Employment Tribunals in 2002. From 1986 until 1996 he was a member of the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland. Prior to his appointment to the bench he acted as convenor of the Faculty of Advocates Education Committee.
