Alastair Thornton obtained his law degree at Glasgow University and was admitted as a solicitor in 1981. He was a partner in A & W M Urquhart from 1983 to 2004, practising civil litigation.
He was a member of the Council of the Law Society of Scotland from 1990 to 2002 and served on numerous committees. He chaired the Society's Judicial Procedure Committee and subsequently its Education and Training Committee and its Guarantee Fund Committee, before being elected to serve as President of the Society for 2000 - 2001.
He was appointed a Part-Time Sheriff in 2003. He is also a practising mediator and a lecturer and tutor in professional ethics in the Professional Competence Course for trainee solicitors in addition to his involvement in the delivery of training to other professionals. He was appointed Deputy Director of Judicial Studies in September 2007.
